Listen to the Debut Episode of Our New Podcast, Waste or Taste
In which we debate the best, worst, and weirdest of Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ remix album
Talking about music with your friends, trying to make them laugh, and playfully arguing about albums and songs—these are some of the best parts of working at a music website. Hearing Things HQ is a fun place to be when all of us start brain-tornado’ing on certain artists, whether we love or hate them (or land somewhere in between). With our podcast Waste or Taste, we’re capturing that kind of unfiltered banter between longtime critics and friends, and inviting you to listen along.
Every episode will feature three out of the five Hearing Things founder-editors: I, Jill Mapes, will be your host, joined by rotating pairs of esteemed colleagues. The concept is simple: We each bring a new song to the table and debate whether it’s Waste or Taste. Sometimes we will reach a critical consensus; other times it will be fisticuffs, absurdity, or both.
In the debut episode, I’m joined by Julianne Escobedo Shepherd and Ryan Dombal to discuss Charli XCX's Brat remix album—specifically, the “Mean Girls,” “I Might Say Something Stupid,” and “Club Classics” remixes. Topics include: Why Julian Casablancas should do a piano-bar album, why the 1975’s Matty Healy should stop talking about his dick, and why most remixes should be UK 2-step remixes.
If you like what you hear, please subscribe to Waste or Taste wherever you get your podcasts. Hearing Things is an independent music publication run by critics, and we could use your support to keep doing what we do.
Waste or Taste is a co-production of Hearing Things and 3dB. We’re produced by Mark Yoshizumi and Elia Einhorn. The show is recorded at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in Downtown Brooklyn.
