What Album Are You Most Excited For in 2025?
I can’t believe my answer is a record called ‘Who Let the Dogs Out.’
January is arguably the worst month of the year, but one silver lining tends to be the onslaught of new music. After a dead December, when releases screech to a halt and the music industry collectively takes a few weeks off, the release calendar swiftly picks back up by mid-January. Our brains are wired to embrace the new at the top of the year, which is why this season is also a great one for discovering newer artists.
Instead of pinning my hopes and dreams to a new Frank Ocean album in 2025, I’m thinking smaller. In the coming weeks, I’m looking forward to records like UK punk duo Lambrini Girls’ debut Who Let the Dogs Out (arriving next week), vocal-electronic innovator Ela Minus’ incredible Dia (out January 17), and Phonetics On and On from Chicago indie rockers Horsegirl (out February 4).
Further into the year, there are new albums on the way from Mdou Moctar, Panda Bear, Perfume Genius, Wednesday, Julia Jacklin, Tame Impala, Destroyer, Shygirl—the list of big-indie favorites goes on. Also, there’s talk of new music from Lorde, Carly Rae Jepsen, Rosalía, and (gasp) D’Angelo in 2025. (Sidenote: I gotta hand it to Stereogum for compiling what has to be the longest and broadest anticipated-releases list of all time (1000+).) So yeah, it’s gonna be a big year for chunes whether Frank skips it or not.
